Ten years ago this month, an English economist coined the term “BRICs” to describe four fast-growing, dynamic countries he believed would transform the global economy: Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Since then, they’ve reshaped the world in a way even he never imagined. The four now comprise quarter of the world’s GDP from 11 per cent 10 years ago. And it’s not just the BRICs – emerging markets from Turkey to Indonesia, with booming populations and a growing middle class are turning old notions of wealth and power upside down.

What was economic theory a decade ago is now playing out in the most concrete of ways: altered migration patterns. Workers are voting with their feet to join these emerging economies, while traditional magnets for the world’s workers, such as the United States, are losing their lustre.

“The shifting balance of global economic growth is bring global migration flows with it,” says Madeleine Sumption, policy analyst at the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute. “We’re seeing lower migration to crisis nations, whereas most of the growth is towards developing nations.”

People are still seeking work in traditional markets, like Germany or Canada. But new, surprising flows are taking place in this post-recession, rocky recovery era — Mexican Americans are returning home, for example, and Spanish graduates are emigrating to Chile and Chinese scientists in the U.K. are leaving to return home. The shift promises to create new types of diasporas, change remittance flows and alter labour markets

Here is the world that was, as told through key flows in labour migration: … (watch the chart … and read the full text).

(My comment:

For me migration IS (should be) a natural human right. But since a far long time – since in old ages people begin to settle – we became used to have a personal space, instead of sharing all the spaces.

The result: not only we POSSESS this space, but we began to belong to it … we became identified with. Today it is in our interest to belong to a country, if possible a family or clan – for our safety, our survival, and we forget now that we became also the property of this place … mainly women and children …

how many small people are denied the right to leave a country? We not only developped possession, greed and war, we also became the possession of the owner of this space … may it be a dictatorial government prohibitting travel outside of its frontiers.

we became submitted to a place, a clan, a family, a culture, a dogma … and now often we have to fight for our freedom, we struggle to escape all that …

yes, I often dream the right to be a nomad. A nomad not only on this planet, but in the whole univers … oh yes, this is my dream!).

Published on Progress online, by Hopi Sen, December 19, 2011.

… On the day of his death, we should look past the accounts of his life, the real and the imagined legend, and focus instead on those for whom the myth was created, and for whom the truth had, at all costs, to be kept.

On my bookshelf sits a small collection of North Korean history and journalism. There are accounts of diplomats stationed in Pyongyang, trying to explain how North Korea formed the way it did, and how its decisions are made. There are books by photographers, who, knowing they are being allowed to photograph only the legend, try to reveal truths inside, or alongside, the propaganda they are forced to focus on.

Most of all, there are two books about the citizenry of the hermit kingdom, presented to us by their regime as participants in mass games, or loyal soldiers, or, as today, as true believers.

To us, those citizens might appear the backdrop to the bizarre life of Kim Jong-Il. In reality, their control was its entire purpose. Their displayed grief is intended to be his highest compliment. Their hidden pain is his ultimate indictment.

We are tempted to focus on the life of Kim Jong-Il. His palaces. His private train, his kidnapping of Japanese actresses and film directors. His taste for fine food, and cognac.

The danger is that we ignore Yodok Concentration camp, where Kang Hwol-Chan was sent, aged nine, because his grandfather had been accused of disloyalty. The danger is we forget the public executions he witnessed as a child.

The danger is that we forget Bukchang, or Kaechon, or Camp 22, where tens of thousands of those the regime deems unreliable are sent, and where thousands of them die.

The danger is that we forget that North Korea is a country where a quarter of the population is officially classed as ‘hostile’, and that those in this class are not allowed more than basic education, nor allowed to travel, and, when rations are available, get the least of them.

The danger is that we skate over the Kwanliso prison camps, the kyohwaso labour camps and the so called ‘9/27’ camps for kotjebi (‘swallows’, street children orphaned by the breakdown of families caused by extreme famine), detention camps where Amnesty international reported meals of ‘80 kernels of corn for every meal, or of three to four spoons of corn meal mixed with hot water.’

We know so little of all of these lives, they are so carefully hidden from us, that they fade from view behind the grossness of the dictator.

We do know enough, however, to piece together a populace suffering in a way that few have ever suffered. A police state, repression, public execution, famine, starvation, labour camps, a system of ranking loyalty that dictates every aspect of your life. It is hard to even catalogue the deaths from famine, though we know the numbers who died are in the hundreds of thousands … //

… In the meantime, we should mark the death of a man who was not real to us by trying one more time to focus on those who his life dominated, and whose sufferings he obscured. We should mark the death of the unreal Kim Jong-Il by remembering those for whom he was all too real. (full text).

(Hopi Sen is a Labour blogger … his cat on twitter).

(My comment: we all have seen the pictures with hungry orphans looking for food in market’s garbage buckets, and all grown ups around ignoring them … letting them go to death …
… now this same people is crying and weeping in our evening TV … why had they not cried their own people’s children before? … and what if the few having not cried will be persecuted later by their peers, their neighbors for lack of community spirit? … I guess we even not imagine what is real dictatorship … I mean, brainwashed people’s real dictatorship … could it be that THE BIG EVIL can be created? Realy created by a lost, brainwashed humanity forgetting its neighbor’s children? … )

Banks receive some people’s savings and pay them a very small interest. Then banks lend this money to clients and ask some more interest. Till here I understand, as the banks have to pay employees (the amount is another question). But the bank also lends only 10% (or less) of the savers money, the rest, 90% or more will be virtual money - means created out of nothing, means: THE BANK DOES NOT POSSESS THIS 90%.

THUS, WHY THE HELL DO WE PAY THEM INTERESTS FOR THIS 90% ?

I guess we cannot explain it, we just repeat the same eternal stupidity, as we are forbidden to see the emperor without its clothes.

And more: IF the banks have NO DEPOSIT for this 90%, why should we pay them this money? Why not put it (the 90%) into a common account (a big pot) to pay with this money all public needs, developments, researches, scools, medical needs, even free houses, transports … ?

What makes us unable to think in this way? Are we so much submitted that in economics we all live with a kind of Economic Stockholm Syndrome? What the hell is happening …

I guess aristocrats, who invented in some dark ages the banking system, strongly filled up our brains with their rules. Rules then out of a feodal believe system. A system submitting us (the 99%) automatically (to them). Thus, today we are unable to leave the system … to let go the known … leave it for the unknown.

Like in the Stockholm Syndrome …

Look, guys, IF we could become able to force our govs to STOP all the running stupidities … my god …

… we just have to accept it ourselves, and force them …

Slavoj Žižek is pleased to note that behind the worldwide protests, from Tahrir Square to Occupy Wall Street, there’s a common impulse. It is not just about single-issue protest, it’s also not a simple demand for democracy. No, it’s anti-capitalism.

This is not, says Žižek, an adequate form of anti-capitalism, because it’s only ethical anti-capitalism; still, at least it’s based on an intuition that ‘the problem is capitalism as such’.

So, does he have anything to offer, a better kind of anti-capitalism going beyond the insufficient ethical kind? The question seems pertinent given his verdict on previous variants:

[T]he 20th century is over. Not only state socialism and the social-democratic welfare state, but also, I would add, the deepest hope of the utopian left, “horizontal organization,” local communities, direct democracy, self-organization – all this, I don’t think it works. So, again, it is a big challenge. The old problem is back, but it is clearer than ever that the old answers are not up to the challenge.

What then? What to do? Er… Žižek has nothing. That is, not anything. Except ‘No dialogue!’ – by which he means no talking to ‘the enemy’, since we ‘need time to construct our own new language, time to formulate’ … (full text).

My comment: my personally experienced reality lets me go now only to natural medecine. Look, life is dangerous, as we can die of it, but: nature brought us to life, nature is what our bodies lived in since thousands of ears … and: pharmaceutical industries are not our friends – they need us, but we do not need them … that’s it.

Yes, one day we will die, but why should I destroy the relation between my body and nature, just for a small longer time at the end, full of disease, with fear to die, being cut from my source, this nature which is our mother …

My doctor, a really nice and lovely women, wanted fill me up with medics, because of the beginning of diabetics and too much cholesterol. Instead I turned away to green stuff and complements etc. etc., and most important: eat 1/4 – yes, eat only the half is not enough … but then, 74 years old, I was able to go twice 6 weeks to enjoy diving vacations in Thailand.

The difficulty surges when you come back from divings. Then your body is used to work hard every day and has learned to accept again more food. When back we move lesser than 3-4 divings per day – in any way, despite we make sports – and thus we have to reduce again quickly our food amount. THEN occurs a hard moment, because even we have no more diabetes, when again we eat too much in relation to our movement, diabetes may come back … so we have to watch us again. Ok, that’s life … but we can make best of it. Isn’t it?

about the 99%’s desire to imitate the 1%, see my comment at the end – Linked on our blogs with Michael Albert, USA. – Published on ZNet, by Michael Albert, November 21, 2011.

One of the most celebrated features of the recent occupation movements has been the slogan, “We are the 99%.” Participants effusively love the slogan, but I have mixed feelings. Occupation critics bemoan absent demands. I say, patience. Occupation critics question ubiquitous moralism. I say, would you prefer being immoral, amoral, or moral?

But when occupiers and critics alike say, we love the creative innovation embodied in the 99% slogan, I worry. Does saying we are the 99% obscure more than it reveals. Will it ultimately misdirect more than focus the movement? Could it even distort movement priorities and practices? Yes, saying we are the 99% aggressively pinpoints a very small group who have overwhelming power and wealth in society. They are owners. They are capitalists. They are on top.

And there is policy related benefit, too. Mainstream corrections for economic crisis seek for the 1% to wind up even more securely in power than they were before the crisis. Mainstream policy makers want to get back to business as usual, which not only gave us the crisis in the first place, but also constantly gives us grotesque divisions of wealth, income, and power. We obviously do not want to get back to business as usual, and saying we are the 99% excellently orients us toward instead redistributing wealth and power.

Even so, I would prefer that we call the 1% capitalists. Calling them capitalists pinpoints that they own the economy. It highlights that you can’t retain owners but not have owners on top. To get rid of 1% dominating 99% requires replacing capitalism. But putting this quibbling aside, virtually every occupier knows the 1% are on top by virtue of owning productive property. Most people watching and learning from the occupations also know this, or can come to know it, and the 1% label wo … //

… Let me give one more example. Suppose, down the road, a time comes for issuing demands. Will coordinator class occupiers be okay with proposals that redistribute power and wealth not only from the top 1%, but also from the top 20% – 25%? Will doctors be okay with proposals from nurses that eat into doctors prerogatives? Will engineers be okay with proposals from workers that eat into engineer’s prerogatives? What about professors supporting students, even when it eats into professors prerogatives? Managers? And though it is harder to navigate the details, what about would-be doctors, engineers, professors, and managers?

If we want a movement that seeks self management, doesn’t that mean we do not want a class division that gives a monopoly on empowering work to a few and then elevates those few coordinators above workers? If we want a movement that welcomes and empowers working people, doesn’t that mean it must be guided by working class needs and desires?

For coordinator class members who will be okay with activism that benefits mainly workers, their involvement will certainly be highly beneficial to movements seeking real change. But for coordinator class members who won’t be okay with workers gains reducing coordinator advantages, their involvement could interfere with seeking classlessness and could become a serious barrier to retaining working class participants – just as the involvement of racists and sexists can be a barrier to retaining people of color and women participants.

My worry is that if we adopt slogans that place a big onus on even admitting that there are class differences within the 99%, much less on calmly and supportively delineating those differences and finding respectful ways to address them, then the obstacles and barriers we face could grow to be insurmountable.

My worry with the slogan we are the 99% is that maybe we need to find a way to talk about ourselves which welcomes participation, by all means, but which also admits differences that need to be addressed.

The desire to address and deal with differences by eliminating elite positions in a new economy is evident in our movements’ attention to self management and participation. This is what our attention to process is ultimately about, getting rid of hierarchies of power and influence. So, without becoming sectarian, without becoming judgmental, without becoming personalistic – can we pay attention to class differences which, if they instead go unmentioned, will get in the way of self management and participation? I think we can, and that we need to. (full text).

My comment: just thanks for this article:

The 1% have not only the real economic power, but also the knowledge of manipulation, plus the absolute will to hold any power and influence. They have the ability TO REALISE all their goals, of which the MAINS STREAM PEOPLE is never aware, because the 1% are the closest, most aggressive hidden sect we have. Yes, sect in an almost religious tradition … and from which a big part of the 99% still tries to imitate anywhat in behavior and believe … yes, with the secret hope to be like them one day …

HERE is the task for OCCUPY anywhat: OCCUPY our false beliefs, OCCUPY our own imitation of social darwinism, OCCUPY our love for every pitfall the 1% places before our feet … we happily step in …

I see also how the highest 25% of our humanity are not different in their behavior towards the lowest 25%.

Fazit: As long as OCCUPY xy looks only for economic abuses, which is higly necessary, the biggest power of the 1% will remain in the 99%’s desire TO BE LIKE THE 1%. So then, why not as slogan:

OCCUPY our desire to imitate the behavior of the 1% … believing one glorious day we could be like them).

The right questions should be:

1) are we able to make a consciously managed systemic change (crash)?

a) advantages: we are free to decide our future;

b) disadvantages/need: we should write off our assets and invest a big part of our energy and time to create consent for a new economic system.

2) or shall we need the experience that no more any manipulation will save the joke?

a) advantages: we have nothing to do. For a while we can enjoy our normal business, problems, pleasures, … the crash will arrive by itself. And we are relieved the pain for consent with bluddy people around us having nothing understood.

b) disadvantages/need: the end can be really painfull.

Der Mensch nährt sich von zwei Quellen:

- von seiner sozialen Integration;

Published on Socialist Worker.org, by Ian Angus and Simon Butler, October 31, 2011.

… But most of the 7 billion are not endangering the earth. The majority of the world’s people don’t destroy forests, don’t wipe out endangered species, don’t pollute rivers and oceans, and emit essentially no greenhouse gases.

Even in the rich countries of the Global North, most environmental destruction is caused not by individuals or households, but by mines, factories and power plants run by corporations that care more about profit than about humanity’s survival.

No reduction in U.S. population would have stopped BP from poisoning the Gulf of Mexico last year. Lower birthrates won’t shut down Canada’s tar sands refinery project, which Bill McKibben has justly called one of the most staggering crimes the world has ever seen.

Universal access to birth control should be a fundamental human right–but it would not have prevented Shell’s massive destruction of ecosystems in the Niger River delta, or the immeasurable damage that Chevron has caused to rainforests in Ecuador.

IRONICALLY, WHILE populationist groups focus attention on the 7 billion, protesters in the worldwide Occupy movement have identified the real source of environmental destruction: not the 7 billion, but the 1 percent, the handful of millionaires and billionaires who own more, consume more, control more and destroy more than all the rest of us put together.

In the United States, the richest 1 percent own a majority of all stocks and corporate equity, giving them absolute control of the corporations that are directly responsible for most environmental destruction.

A recent report prepared by the British consulting firm Trucost for the United Nations found that just 3,000 corporations cause $2.15 trillion in environmental damage every year.

Outrageous as that figure is–only six countries have a GDP greater than $2.15 trillion–it substantially understates the damage, because it excludes costs that would result from “potential high-impact events such as fishery or ecosystem collapse” and “external costs caused by product use and disposal, as well as companies’ use of other natural resources and release of further pollutants through their operations and suppliers” … //

… Critics of the too-many-people argument are often accused of believing that there are no limits to growth. In our case, that simply isn’t true. What we do say is that in an ecologically rational and socially just world, where large families aren’t an economic necessity for hundreds of millions of people, population will stabilize. In Betsy Hartmann’s words, “The best population policy is to concentrate on improving human welfare in all its many facets. Take care of the population and population growth will go down.”

The world’s multiple environmental crises demand rapid and decisive action, but we can’t act effectively unless we understand why they are happening. If we misdiagnose the illness, at best, we will waste precious time on ineffective cures; at worst, we will make the crises worse.

The too-many-people argument directs the attention and efforts of sincere activists to programs that will not have any substantial effect. At the same time, it weakens efforts to build an effective global movement against ecological destruction: It divides our forces, by blaming the principal victims of the crisis for problems they did not cause.

Above all, it ignores the massively destructive role of an irrational economic and social system that has gross waste and devastation built into its DNA. The capitalist system and the power of the 1 percent, not population size, are the root causes of today’s ecological crisis.

As pioneering ecologist Barry Commoner once said, “Pollution begins not in the family bedroom, but in the corporate boardroom.” (full text).

(My comment: best population policy is to LET HAVE ALL WOMEN TOTAL CONTROL OF THEIR BODY by accepting for them total economic independence and cultural freedom from men. THIS is best to reduce any birthrate)!

Linked on our blogs with forgotten how Govs have to be run? – Published on Global Research.ca, by Michel Chossudovsky, October 13, 2011 (see my comment at the end).

… Manufacturing Dissent:

At the same time, “manufactured dissent” is intent upon promoting political and social divisions (e.g. within and between political parties and social movements). In turn, it encourages the creation of factions within each and every organization.

With regard to the anti-globalization movement, this process of division and fragmentation dates back to the early days of the World Social Forum. (See Michel Chossudovsky, Manufacturing Dissent: The Anti-globalization Movement is Funded by the Corporate Elites, Global Research, September 20, 2010).

Most of the progressive organizations of the post-World War II period, including the European “Left” have, in the course of the last thirty years, been transformed and remoulded. The “Free Market” system (Neoliberalism) is the consensus of the “Left”. This applies, among others, to the Socialist Party in France, the Labour Party in Britain, the Social Democrats in Germany, not to mention the Green Party in France and Germany.

In the US, bi-partisanship is not the result of the interplay of Congressional party politics. A handful of powerful corporate lobby groups control both the Republicans and the Democrats. The “bi-partisan consensus” is established by the elites who operate behind the scenes. It is enforced by the main corporate lobby groups, which exert a stranglehold over both major political parties.

In turn, the leaders of the AFL-CIO have also been co-opted by the corporate establishment against the grassroots of the US labor movement.

The leaders of organized labor attend the annual meetings of the Davos World Economic Forum (WEF). They collaborate with the Business Roundtable. But at the same time, the grassroots of the US labor movement has sought to to carry out organizational changes which contribute to democratizing the leadership of individual trade unions.

The elites will promote a ritual of dissent with a high media profile, with the support of network TV, the corporate news as well as the internet.

The economic elites – which control major foundations – also oversee the funding of numerous civil society organizations, which historically have been involved in the protest movement against the established economic and social order. The programs of many NGOs (including those involved in the Occupy Wall Street Movement) rely heavily on funding from private foundations including the Ford, Rockefeller, MacArthur, Tides foundations, among others.

Historically, the anti-globalization movement which emerged in the 1990s has opposed Wall Street and the Texas oil giants controlled by Rockefeller, et al. Yet the foundations and charities of Rockefeller, Ford et al have, over the years, generously funded progressive anti-capitalist networks as well as environmentalists (opposed to Big Oil) with a view to ultimately overseeing and shaping their various activities.

Colored Revolutions: … //

… The Role of CANVAS-OTPOR in the Occupy Wall Street Movement:

CANVAS-OPTOR is currently involved in the Occupy Wall Street Movement (#OWS).

Several key organizations currently involved in The Occupy Wall Street (#OWS) movement played a significant role in The Arab Spring. Of significance, Anonymous, the social media hacktivist group, was involved in waging cyber-attacks on Egyptian government websites at the height of “The Arab Spring”.(http://anonops.blogspot.com, see also http://anonnews.org/)

In May 2011, “Anonymous” waged cyberattacks on Iran and last August, it waged similar cyber-attacks directed against the Syrian Ministry Defense. These cyber-attacks were waged in support of the Syrian “opposition” in exile, which is largely integrated by Islamists. (See Syrian Ministry Of Defense Website Hacked By ‘Anonymous’, Huffington Post, August 8, 2011).

The actions of “Anonymous” in Syria and Iran are consistent with the framework of the “Colored Revolutions”. They seek to demonize the political regime and create political instability. (For analysis on Syria’s Opposition, see Michel Chossudovsky, SYRIA: Who is Behind The Protest Movement? Fabricating a Pretext for a US-NATO “Humanitarian Intervention” Global Research, May 3, 2011)

Both CANVAS and Anonymous are now actively involved in the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

The precise role of CANVAS in the Occupy Wall Street Movement remains to be assessed.

Ivan Marovic, a leader of CANVAS recently addressed the Occupy Wall Street protest movement in New York City. Listen carefully to his speech. (Bear in mind that his organization CANVAS is supported by NED).

(my comment:

between 1974 and 1998 I participated in several groups wanting change the society and all the rest etc. Yes, when the change seemed a bit more revolutionary, I always observed persons being obviously out of elite’s spheres. In my times they didn’t take over directly, but influenced the leader who was a person out of normal people, having a special idea. Then, a bit later our groups were quickly defamed as religious sects or psycho-sects. Yes, this play seems be an old strategy to stop people wanting changes.

Facit: a totally transparent democracy seems the only way, secrets are the food for dictatorships and any feudalism. Yes, in democracy decision making is often long, laborious and painful, as it is a necessary learning process.

Abolition of any hierarchy is an absolute necessity, to force us to be responsible ourselves. Thus, we must stop waiting for advices coming from someone who seems more clever than we feel ourselves. Begging always for advice, help, solutions instead of thinking ourselves is the beginning of hierarchy.

And yes, even if this OWS could be promoted by elites, we have to take it over and WE are giving the direction.

OK?).

The IMF Independent Evaluation Office IEO published on February last their IMF Performance in the Run-Up to the Financial and Economic Crisis, which gives an account of the Fund’s “cultures.”

Generally, audit or evaluation reports of international organizations, internal or quasi-internal, act as validation for the organization’s mistakes and have no practical consequences.

Such reports let us know that the organization has done this or that wrong, or that it was unable to assess the result of a five-year loan period owing to a lack of the relevant indicators, or that a certain policy or practice did not yield the expected results.

Nothing is said about who is accountable for mistakes done. And, once this self-criticism is published, it is assumed that the organization has made a public acknowledgement of its mistakes, the press has taken note, absolution has been given and nothing more needs be done … //

… Summing up, the IEO holds the view that the Fund lacks analytical capability, does not correctly assess risks, their officers do not admit contrary opinions, they impose their points of view on the authorities of developing countries but fear expressing them before the ones from developed nations.

The IMF has internal governance problems and “long-standing” organizational ones, and not only did it not alert countries early on the possible risks of the financial system, but, on the contrary, told them for long months that the perspectives were good, that the system was working well and would withstand the American housing bubble and other disturbances, and that the outlook was the best in years for Europe; ultimately, it told them there would be no crisis, neither local nor global, and that there was nothing to worry about.

If we rigorously stick to these conclusions, each and every one of the recommendations the Fund has formulated to the nations along the history, as well as each and every one of its adjustment programs should be placed under judgment.

Such conclusions might as well be used as evidence by the Asian countries to hold the Fund accountable for their fatal advices during their time of crisis, from which only Malaysia come out unscathed, by firmly opposing the application of the Fund’s programs; or Argentina, for the Fund’s performance before, during, and after the 2001 fall, which determined the most devastating crisis the country has any memory of.

The Fund on its part does not hold on to its flawed conclusions anymore; after getting it wrong again and again and issuing forecasts, which announced good prospects of world recovery, their experts now recognize that they did not “perceive” what was really going on, and warn that the world is entering the danger zone and to avoid it advice the developed nations to apply the same adjustment programs which devastated for decades the developing world.

It would be a surprise indeed if, after so many blunders, anyone would pay serious attention to the IMF. Nonetheless, ignoring it is not advisable either. The governments would do well to ask themselves whether the time has not come to withdraw their endorsement to the organization. (full long text).

(Later, my comment: I am still stunned how we can accept all these explanations about errors, mistakes etc. served by the FED-IWF-Bankster Clique. It is obvious that all this was produced intentionally. Their goal: disturbed anxious people battling for their survival and indebted, crashing nations can be easier manipulated by a small oligarchy. Any question?).

Heidi.

Published on Al Jazeera, by Kamal Hyder, Sept. 13, 2011.

It pours and pours. There has been no let-up in the torrents across the Badin district – a land that receives less than 60 mm of rain in a year has now seen over 300 mm in just of 48 hours. But it was a crisis already in the making because of record rains in the country’s southern province of Sind which received an incredible 1,000 mm of rain in less than three weeks and the deluge still continues pounding several districts in the area.

The problem has been exacerbated because the Left Bank Overflow Drain or LBOD has not been working at its optimum. The drain, with a usual capacity to withstand up to 6,000 cusecs of water flow, and sends overflow to the Arabian Sea has been the victim of poor planning and design as well as excessive government corruption has had its capability reduced to around 4,000 cusecs.

Since Badin and many parts of Sind are prone to waterlogging, the land was not able to absorb the excessive rainfall and as such put a severe strain on the LOBD canal and caused major breaches in the poorly maintained embankments.

The other factor that complicated the situation was the drought-like conditions experienced in July; leading the government to flood its canals to help overcome the dry spell. The canals were in full flow when the unexpected wet spell struck – the worst in over 300 hundred years of recorded history

According to many locals the it is the worst flood they have seen in living memory. As we arrived in Badin the situation was already at crisis point and tens of thousands were on the move as the raging waters destroyed over 9,000 villages and destroyed over 2.5 million bales of cotton just weeks before the harvest. But the real worry was the fact that large towns were cut-off by the flood.

Faulty foresight: … //

… Be grateful:

Pakistan’s prime minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani congratulated his provincial and federal teams on doing a splendid job but on the ground they did nothing at all and if they did try to fool the world – then they failed. As my team and I left Badin, we stopped at a roadside school now a makeshift camp for those running away from the flood. The school was under several feet of dark brown water. Our fixer asked the man appointed as the head of relief camp about the toilet facilities; he said the people could relieve themselves in the water!

A father holding his child asked me to have a look inside. For a moment I thought why am I doing this but when I looked into the eyes of the children and saw their innocent smiles I followed the children and their dad into waist-high muck to see the fetid conditions they were living under.

The stench of sewage and human waste was unbearable.

The proud family of 8 children and their parents spent their nights in a room full of the dirty water. They told me to tell the world what they were going through. There were hundreds more in the same compound including pregnant women and sick children. As I walked back through the filth I saw a government-appointed caretaker sitting on a chair outside the compound in spotless light blue clothes, while the women sat on the ground.

He told me they have a roof over their heads and shouldn’t be complaining and I turned around to tell him “I would not even put my dog in such a place!” (full text).

Published on WSWS, by Bill Van Auken, 24 August 2011. l

A column by Philip Zelikow entitled “Gaddafi’s fall will renew the Arab spring,” published on the Financial Times web site Monday, provides a glimpse into the far-reaching aims being pursued by Washington and the other major imperialist powers in their supposedly “humanitarian” intervention in Libya.

Zelikow is a former State Department counselor under Condoleezza Rice in the George W. Bush administration and a former advisor on the National Security Council under George H.W. Bush during the period of the collapse of the Soviet bloc. He is a trusted and experienced operative within the US political establishment, so much so that he was tapped to serve as executive director of the 9/11 Commission. In that position he was the individual most responsible for organizing a cover-up of the US government’s role in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Close to the Project for a New American Century and one of the authors of the Bush doctrine of preemptive war, Zelikow has intimate experience in both the theory and practice of US imperialism’s drive to impose its hegemony over the Middle East.

Zelikow begins his column by debunking the arguments of those on the Republican right who opposed the Libyan war as an example of “liberal interventionism.” He dismisses this concern, saying it is merely a misunderstanding “fed by some rhetoric, especially from the government.” The war, he writes, was launched because of Libya’s particular “history and a geography that well justified hard-headed calculations by the US, Britain, France and many other countries that they should seize this opportunity to help the rebels get rid of this particular demented regime.”

In other words, the major imperialist powers saw a set of circumstances in the Libyan events that allowed them to “seize the opportunity” to execute a military campaign for regime-change for the purpose of establishing firm control over the oil-rich North African nation.

In part, these circumstances were conditioned by the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt and their echo within the Libyan population in the form of ruthlessly repressed demonstrations against the Gaddafi regime. In part, they were determined by Libya’s character: a country of less than 6.5 million people, sitting on top of the largest oil reserves on the African continent and with a long Mediterranean coastline directly facing southern Europe.

Having fought until the bitter end to keep the dictatorial regimes of Mubarak and Ben Ali in power in Egypt and Tunisia, the imperialists saw the opportunity to use the so-called “Arab Spring” as a cover for seizing control of Libya, even as they and the local ruling elites exploit the absence of revolutionary leadership to re-establish their domination in Tunisia and Egypt.

This is what gave rise to the war supposedly waged for “human rights” and to “protect Libyan civilians,” pretexts that Zelikow rightly dismisses as mere rhetoric … //

… With the scrapping of the “statist model” in a country like Libya, one would presumably also get rid of the troublesome problem of state control of oil resources, opening the way for Exxon-Mobil, BP, Chevron and other energy conglomerates to claim direct ownership of the oil fields, taking control of production and pricing and freezing out rivals in China, Russia and India.

Zelikow concludes: “Outsiders can help all this, by offering information, ideas and incentives. But the outsiders will not be the deciders.” Of course, just as the NATO outsiders are merely “helping” the “rebels” in Libya.

Zelikow rose to prominence in US establishment circles during the period of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Eastern European Stalinist bureaucracies. He then served as a senior security adviser during the Persian Gulf War of 1990-1991. He became an advocate for the policy that led to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, a war that was made possible by the liquidation of the USSR. Now he is proposing a major escalation of that policy.

His column on Libya serves to confirm that the war there has nothing to do with humanitarianism or human rights, but represents the violent subjugation of a former colonial country. And it is a warning: Libya is only the beginning of an imperialist drive to reorder the entire Middle East. Given the conflicting interests between the major imperialist powers themselves, this process threatens to give rise to far bloodier conflicts in the foreseeable future. (full text).

(My comment: The Rainmakers are ALWAYS splitting any movement, whatever, wherever and however something is running. The lesson for us: AS LONG AS WE LED US DIVIDE, THEY WILL WIN. What we have to learn is: in each new social construction must be included the most important goals of each group. We must learn to construct cooperative models, not dictatorial divisions of good and bad. Exemple: Swiss politics, where each big current is represented. Politics are programmed by compromises, people have the last word by yes-no votes to projects. Ok, with hard word fightings, slow evolutions, asking patience and understanding for adversary’s goals, but a kind of peace and prosperity is the gift).

First dedicated to my personal life, it shows that not much has to be told about me beside my eternal fascination for divings, fishes and corals. But I have a personal interest: politics … this sandbox and all its actors playing above our heads, with consequences for our daily life. So why not have a better look at what is happening? So, what about …
