A Look at the Occupy Movement – Linked on our blogs with Should Africa Repay its Odious Debts? – Published on Dissident Voice, by Ron Jacobs, October 24, 2011.

… It is impossible to put every one involved in this movement into one ideological box. In its current state, it is reasonable to portray the Occupy movement as one where multiple ideologies are competing to be heard. Libertarians and socialists; anarchists and liberals. They are all present and they are all vocal in their attempts to represent the movement.   Read the rest of this entry »

The Planned Rescue Package Must not Be Introduced

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Published on Current Concerns no. 21, by Dr. Hansjörg Häfele, October 16, 2011.

… Only a consistent stability pact is of help:

Instead of stumbling from one crisis summit to the next and from one rescue package to  the other and thus creating a trust-destroying picture of regulatory disorientation, helplessness, talkativeness and short-sightedness – too many cooks spoil the broth which includes the European Central Bank – euro-Europe primarily needs sustainable measures.   Read the rest of this entry »

What lies behind the rescue of the Euro?

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Published on World Socialist Web Site WSWS, by Peter Schwarz, October 21, 2011.

This state of affairs cannot be changed by pressure from the streets. The crisis is not simply a consequence of misguided policy decisions, which can be corrected. It is the crisis of a social system based on irreconcilable class antagonisms. The capitalist system cannot be reformed, it can only be abolished. The current crisis has developed over decades. The incomes of working people have been stagnating or declining since the early 1980s or before, while a small elite at the top of society has accumulated untold riches. That wealth can only be sustained by constantly squeezing more surplus value out of the working class. Read the rest of this entry »
